Three generations on the parade
A greengrocer's shop is a simple thing done well every single day: buy the best at the market before dawn, set it out by hand, sell it fresh, know your customers. This family has done exactly that on Mattock Lane for over sixty years.

The shop
The green and white awning on the corner of Mattock Lane and Churchfield Road has been part of West Ealing since the 1960s. The shop passed from one generation to the next, and the third generation runs it today, which is why customers who have shopped here for forty years still see a familiar face behind the scales.
Every morning starts at the wholesale market. The van is unloaded, the orders are packed, the boxes go out for delivery, and the display is built by hand: crates of apples, oranges and stone fruit, the veg along the front, salad kept in the cool, flowers by the door, prices written on cards. By eight the shutters are up.
What has changed and what has not
Fruit and veg boxes delivered to the door are the newest thing, started so that customers who could not get to the shop still got the same produce. The rest is as it always was: produce chosen by people who know it, sold loose and ripe at a fair price, by a family that lives and works here.
